Myths held about  animals that can create barriers….

Myths are stories we pass from one individual to the next until it’s repeated enough and everyone says “that’s true”

Dogs are loving and protective

TRUE.

A dog’s brain releases oxytocin. The same hormone a mother secretes shortly before and after birth. It permits bonding. The same with humans and dogs-probably all mammals for that matter.

Dogs only see in black and white

FALSE.

They can see some colors, specifically yellow and blue-although a little dull. If you want to brighten their day wear a lot of yellow and blue on your head….then they can watch you as you smile to them.

All cats hate water

FALSE.

Cats originated in the deserts of Africa so water wasn’t a part of their early development but I expect there have been things you never tried but did later in life. I had a cat who would come into the shower and drink water as it flowed off my hand.

Horses have extraordinary memories

TRUE.

Horses are intelligent  and have long memories..maybe even longer than elephants.

Cats only purr when they are happy

FALSE.

For the most part that is the case, but also when frightened, or sick. Keep in mind what is happening in the moment; is there reason for kitty to be happy? If not, call your vet, or a veterinary clinic and ASK. Cats are great at hiding illness.

I need to show my dog who’s boss by being the pack leader

FALSE.

Dogs like children need someone to be the leader. At times when people want to show their dog “who’s boss” they think they have to yell and discipline the dog’s every move. That will only create more fear.

Dogs only eat grass when they are sick

FALSE:

Dogs eat grass because it’s tasty. Don’t you love your leafy greens!

Cats always land on their feet

FALSE.

Most of the time. So if your cat is up high and you feel uncertain; get your kitty down. Once your kitty is down and safe,   you can train them not to go in areas you find dangerous. Cats can and do get hurt from falls.

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks

FALSE:

Puppies’ brains are sponges. With ANY dog, like with any human the better the quality of the relationship the more new tricks can be taught.

Neutering a male dog will ‘emasculate’ them

FALSE.

Neutering a dog can decrease some wandering behavior, marking of territory (although that is more common among cats.) but most of all it is better for your dogs health. Usually this can be done at six months but for larger dogs you should wait 1 yr due to their bodies still growing for up to two years.

Dogs and cats hate each other

FALSE.

Animals like people have their own likes and dislikes and overall can be more tolerant. Socializing the two can be done. Just ask Sanya and T.C. They are best buds.
